De Verenigde Staten waren nog neutraal. USS Kearny bestookte de aanvallers van een konvooi al met dieptebommen.
Op 17 oktober 1941 raakte USS Kearny (DD-432) betrokken bij de gevechten rond konvooi SC 48, ongeveer 400 mijl ten zuiden van IJsland. De Verenigde Staten waren nog niet aan de oorlog gaan deelnemen. Kearny deed dienst bij konvooien in de Noord-Atlantische Oceaan en was een van de vier Amerikaanse torpedobootjagers die te hulp werden geroepen nadat Duitse U-boten het konvooi hadden aangevallen en de Canadese escortevaartuigen hadden overrompeld.
