Erwin Rommel had het Achtste Leger gedurende de zomer van 1942 teruggedrongen tot in Egypte, maar bij Alam Halfa, in de eerste dagen van september, hield Bernard Montgomery, die op 7 augustus het bevel over het Achtste Leger had overgenomen, hem tegen en dreef hij het Panzerleger terug naar zijn uitgangsstelling. Het was Rommels eerste duidelijke nederlaag in de woestijn, en hij herstelde daar niet snel van.
