Erwin Rommel hatte die Eighth Army im Laufe des Sommers 1942 nach Ägypten zurückgedrängt, doch bei Alam Halfa stoppte ihn Bernard Montgomery, der am 7. August das Kommando über die Eighth Army übernommen hatte, in den ersten Septembertagen und trieb die Panzerarmee auf ihre Ausgangslinie zurück. Es war Rommels erste klare Niederlage in der Wüste, und er erholte sich nicht schnell davon.
