Am 17. Oktober 1941 wurde die USS Kearny (DD-432) in die Kämpfe um den Geleitzug SC 48 hineingezogen, etwa 400 Meilen südlich von Island. Die Vereinigten Staaten waren noch nicht in den Krieg eingetreten. Die Kearny war im Geleitzugdienst im Nordatlantik eingesetzt und gehörte zu den vier amerikanischen Zerstörern, die zur Hilfe gerufen wurden, nachdem deutsche U-Boote den Geleitzug angegriffen und dessen kanadische Geleitsicherung überwältigt hatten. Das Kommando führte Lieutenant Commander Anthony L. Danis.
