Le 17 octobre 1941, l’USS Kearny (DD-432) fut entraîné dans les combats autour du convoi SC 48, à environ 400 milles au sud de l’Islande. Les États-Unis n’étaient pas encore entrés en guerre. Le Kearny effectuait des missions d’escorte de convois dans l’Atlantique Nord et faisait partie des quatre destroyers américains appelés en renfort après l’attaque du convoi par des U-boote allemands, qui avaient débordé ses escorteurs canadiens. Le lieutenant de vaisseau de première classe Anthony L. Danis en avait le commandement.
