La deuxième bataille d’El-Alamein s’ouvrit le 23 octobre 1942 par un puissant barrage d’artillerie, appuyé par des attaques aériennes. Lors de sa première phase, connue sous le nom de « Break-In », le XXXe corps britannique attaqua le secteur nord tandis que le XIIIe corps lançait une attaque secondaire au sud. Le 2 novembre, les Britanniques cherchaient à transformer cette percée initiale en brèche que les forces de l’Axe ne pourraient pas tenir.
