Erwin Rommel avait repoussé la Huitième Armée jusqu'en Égypte durant l'été 1942, mais lors de la bataille d'Alam Halfa, dans les premiers jours de septembre, Bernard Montgomery, qui avait pris le commandement de la Huitième Armée le 7 août, l'arrêta et repoussa la Panzerarmee sur ses positions de départ. Ce fut la première défaite nette de Rommel dans le désert, et il ne s'en remit pas rapidement.
