On New Guinea, the Allied plan depended on two forces crossing terrain that made movement difficult even before the Japanese tried to stop them.
On 21 October 1942, Australian troops who had fought through Templeton’s Crossing on the Kokoda Trail closed on the main Japanese positions at Eora Creek. The clash belonged to a wider Allied effort to cut off Japanese forces withdrawing before the Australian advance. It was not a single-road pursuit: General MacArthur had ordered a coordinated movement on two trails, with the Kumusi River as the intended barrier to retreat.
