The 62nd Army Left the Orlovka Gully

The Soviet 62nd Army withdrew from the Orlovka gully. The fighting around Stalingrad’s factories carried on regardless.

On 7 October 1942, the Soviet 62nd Army withdrew from the Orlovka gully in Stalingrad. Its departure from the gully did not bring a pause in the fighting. Combat continued around the Stalingrad Tractor Factory, the Red October factory and the sports stadium. The day’s events held two facts together: the army had given up one position, while the struggle around the city’s industrial sites continued.

The Orlovka salient, north-west of the factory district, had been under German attack since late September. Elsewhere in the city, German attacks were concentrated on the large factories. The pressure fell on Soviet defenders in buildings whose scale and industrial character made the fighting a contest for particular structures and ground, rather than simply a movement across a map.

The German assault on Stalingrad had become close combat. A week later, on 14 October, the Germans would throw five divisions and heavy air support against the Tractor Factory. Soviet defenders, commanded by General Chuikov, had developed close-fighting methods and prepared killing zones to draw in advancing Germans. Attacks focused on the Barricades, Red October and the Tractor Factory. The fighting around the Tractor Factory remained especially severe, and Soviet forces still held it.

That context made the withdrawal from Orlovka significant without making it the end of the battle. The Soviet 62nd Army lost ground in the gully; it did not leave Stalingrad. The named positions remained contested, and combat carried on around the factory district and the stadium. In a battle often reduced to the names of its factories, 7 October came down to two things: a withdrawal at Orlovka, and no cessation of the fighting elsewhere.
