Krav Maga – The Ugliest Way to Defend Yourself
Gian Spencer is a cop, a decent Italian, he’s serious about his career and his public service, but a really funny guy. Big, but not heavy, though. Always puts humor into everything around him. When he wasn’t in police uniform, he could pass for a janitor. When he’s dressed for Sunday mass, he looks like a guy from Wall Street. It’s Gian Spencer, a cop and a KravMaga artist.
Along with the name, there is a person who has everyone’s fear of being mugged in dark alleys. With such a profession, there is a person who knows how to maintain peace and order. With Krav Maga there is a beast that shows no mercy to attackers and anyone else exhibiting sinister plans on him or anyone in his sight. It’s Gian Spencer, a cop and a KravMaga artist.
He’s like most of us. What sets him apart is his confidence in his ability to protect himself, his family and those around him from unexpected attacks by criminals, with or without weapons. Gian Spencer is the epitome of a normal person and the warrior we all want to be when threatened.
Enough of Gian and let’s talk about Krav Maga. Meaning “contact combat”, it is Israel’s official hand-to-hand combat system, used for decades by the Israel Defense Forces. Conceived as a simple and effective art of self-defense, “Krav” is an effective and brutal technique used against unprovoked attacks; the first one you can learn and be skillful, the second one you can go anywhere because the criminals don’t hide in any particular territory. These tactics that the usual martial arts prohibit, Krav Maga allows. From those nasty kicks in the groin to even nastier gouges in the eyes, from deadly elbows to the throat to the vicious pinching of the neck – Krav Maga teaches it and enthusiasts practice it. If that sounds vicious, it is. If you think there’s a street fighting element to it, well, yeah!
So, are there rules in Krav Maga? Yes there is. And there is only one. “Do not hurt yourself.” This is the strong statement of Josef Belsari, owner and trainer of the Belsari Brothers Martial Arts Academy. “When your only concern is surviving an attack, why should you consider just pinching your attacker in the nose?” By the way, Josef is only five feet and five inches tall, wears glasses and works at the local library. His two older brothers tease his gentle ways, and his two sisters are always amused by his collection and constant humming of Bon Jovi songs. Nothing says Josef is a Krav Maga artist until he is provoked or people close to him are in danger.
With Krav Maga, you don’t get those dance moves to thwart your enemies, and you don’t get those “was on, waxed” tactics to defeat criminals. Josef Belsari and Gian Spencer are strong testimony that protecting yourself isn’t about those moves and kicks and lots of dialogue you see in martial arts movies. Both would immediately follow this statement by saying that most forms of martial arts are sport-oriented and designed to win competitions and tournaments only. With KM, what makes you a winner is that you really beat any attacker, whether they point a knife at your face or show off biceps with the size and pulse of a rhinoceros preparing for an attack.
While other martial arts earn you a skill level belt or some other form of recognition; your only recognitions would be to be able to weaken an attacker or in most cases to be able to move freely and confidently that you can handle any attacker. Krav Maga workouts are informal and eclectic, freeing up many beginners as they go through conditional drills and calisthenics, routine sparring practices, and then different techniques suited to the different dangers posed by any attack.
Your instinct and your physical condition are your best weapon in Krav Maga. During a fight, a few movements of Krav are enough and your enemy is on the ground and begs for mercy. No more of those punching or kicking exchanges, just an instant response from your body and you’re done. The moves used in Krav are simple but render your enemy powerless. Ugly? Yes.
You might be wondering why this form of combat is taking shape and why KM videos are still sold out. This is because the truth is known about all other varieties of martial arts. They work well in the movies, but they’re never functional in a street attack. As the military and law enforcement have used Krav Maga in their operations, this does not mean that only people in uniform can protect themselves and their loved ones from attack. You should be able to too.
