Women And Sports – Title IX To The Rescue!
Recent research shows that inactive or sedentary women have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, colon cancer, and depression. Other research shows that by increasing their physical activity and improving their diet, women can significantly reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes and many other risk factors associated with inactivity. Even though information about the health benefits of exercise for women is readily available, women still report having more problems with exercise and, overall, exercise less frequently than men.
Research shows that women generally find more reasons not to exercise than men. This is likely due to multiple factors that influence each woman’s decision to exercise, including various social, psychological, societal, and family pressures. I’ve read that it’s been reported that female gender roles like caring for children and running a family and household can hinder a woman’s drive or even overall ability to consider her own health as a priority. This is unfortunate, because in today’s society, no gender bias should prevent women from leading healthy and active lives. However, the tide is changing and an amendment adopted in 1972 has a lot to do with it.
The increase in women’s participation in sports is largely due to the amendment known as Title IX passed in 1972 which leveled the playing field for women in college sports. Women cannot be discriminated against, and institutions such as universities that receive federal aid are now required to provide equal funding for women’s and men’s sports. This has caused an ever-increasing increase in women’s participation in sports. Women who grew up without help from Title IX may still find it more difficult to adopt a lifestyle of exercise and sport because there were social pressures and prejudices that did not support them. Playing sports and developing an active lifestyle early in life can get girls into the habit of exercising regularly and help them maintain this habit for life. They also develop social skills, interpersonal skills, better self-confidence and self-esteem, and a sense of belonging to something bigger than yourself.
It’s now socially acceptable for women to play any sport they can think of, and I’m not just talking about “women’s” sports. I’m the varsity coach of a women’s ice hockey team and these girls are just as good an athletic team as any men’s team I’ve ever seen. The girls now play all the male dominated sports and even the most difficult ones with great success like football, rugby, ice hockey and even lacrosse. It’s a great time for women’s athletics and the future looks even brighter.
