Football – Not For Dumb People
For those of you who think professional football players can be as dumb as tree stumps and still play, as long as they’re big and strong, have an arm that can throw a grenade at hand from Ohio to California or they have a leg that can strip chrome off a bumper, you have to think again. Professional football is a very complex sport and unless you have a good head on your shoulders, you’ll find out the hard way that it’s not just about skill.
Of course, you have to be big and strong, especially if you’re going to be a lineman. These guys go over ladders and 300+ pounds and feel like mack trucks when they hit you. Granted, if you’re a weak 90-pounder, you won’t get far in football. And yes, if you have a fantastic arm and can throw a soccer ball the full length of the field with precision, you will most likely make a good quarterback, provided you have your head on the shoulder.
Okay, so why the need for brains? Isn’t it a pretty simple game? Isn’t the object of the game to score a goal by running or passing the ball over the goal line? And if it’s not simple enough, you can also dismiss it if you think you’re too far for a regular score. How hard can it be? High school kids play it and some of those kids aren’t the brightest in the bunch.
To answer this question, one must understand the level at which professional football is played. These players ARE the strongest of the strong and the most talented. They have the best arms and legs. When it comes to raw talent, it doesn’t get any better. What separates good players from great players is how they assimilate the game intellectually. In professional football, there are a large number of both offensive and defensive plays. Some teams have playbooks that have well over 100 games. And they are all used. If the coach calls a play, you better know what that means and how you’re supposed to react. That means storing a hundred or more games in your head. And you thought cramming for an exam was hard. This requires a certain degree of brain power.
Imagine the coach calls a game and you forget what game it is and miss a task, route or block. It could mean the difference between to score and not to score or the opposition to score or not to score. Usually, mistakes decide games. By having the games cold, you minimize the risk of these errors.
So the next time you think football players are just a bunch of stupid sportsmen, I suggest you try and get one of their playbooks and see if you can learn any of it. -only half of what they contain.
Professional football. This is NOT for stupid people.
