Tennis Leaves Grass and Heads to Hard Courts
The ATP Tennis Tour has now moved away from the European grass and grass courts and has now embarked on the hard court season. It’s the first time in many years that world number one Roger Federer has entered this phase of the season without winning one of the year’s Grand Slams. He lost in the Australian Open semi-finals to eventual winner Novak Djokovic and then couldn’t take the French crown from Rafael Nadal, who won his fourth consecutive French title. Worse still was Federer’s loss at Wimbledon, once again to Nadal in what has been described as the greatest tennis match ever.
That leaves Federer with just one Grand Slam title, the US Open, which he will defend at the end of August. This could be his last fight as a Grand Slam title holder. Already, many tennis watchers are dismissing the big man, believing he will lose his world number one spot to Nadal by the end of the year. Federer, however, remains favorite to win the US Open at 5/4 and Nadal is currently 5/2. Nadal didn’t have the best moments at Flushing Meadow and is yet to progress beyond the quarter-finals. It is true that the surfaces are not suitable for his game, but his victory at Wimbledon is proof that the game as a whole continues to improve and it is surely an event that he will target, if not this year, certainly the next.
Perhaps the threat to Federer’s last remaining Grand Slam crown will come from Serbian Djokovic. With the Australian Grand Slam already in his bag, the world number three will be looking to do better this year. Federer beat him in the final last year, but Djokovic is now a year older and that year he has matured at a rapid pace and is now playing on his favorite surface. He also had some priceless wins over Federer; first the victory in the Australian Open semifinals, but before that, Djokovic beat him in the Rogers Cup in Toronto. These are wins that if nothing else will bother the Swiss and after suffering the loss of their beloved Wimbledon crown to Nadal, doubts will surely linger of a Djokovic-like event at Flushing Meadow. Djokovic can be backed at 4/1 to win the US Open.
