5 Ways to Become a Better Footballer (Soccer Player)

Football (or soccer as ‘non-Britons’ call it) is the most popular sport in the world. Millions of people play, at different levels, every day. Most people play for fun, others professionally, but the goal of the game is almost always the same: TO WIN! Over the course of the article, I’ll suggest ways to become a better footballer (and therefore increase your and your teams’ chances of winning games). All suggestions made will result in improvements to your game, but some will take longer than others to “blossom”. Here is:-

FITNESS: Watch the top footballers and you’ll notice they produce a lot of movement over the 90 minutes, often covering 10-15km. To do this requires high levels of cardiovascular fitness. To acquire such a physical condition, it takes dedication and discipline. Another sport where participants have very high fitness levels, probably more so than footballers, is boxing (maybe not always heavyweight!). Therefore, my suggestion for improving your fitness would be to train like a boxer! Not in combat, etc., but by getting up early (ideally between 5 and 6 am) and having a session. Ideally, this should include a run followed by cardiovascular activities such as jump rope, star jumps, etc. Add to that some push-ups, crunchies and sit-ups and your fitness will start to improve significantly. Ideally, I would suggest your session last no less than an hour, at least 4-5 times a week. Training this early will kickstart your metabolism for the day and psychologically it will give you a sense of accomplishment that should motivate you for the day ahead.

AIM! Get up at 5:30 a.m. 5 times a week and complete a 4-5 mile run followed by 5 x 20 push-ups, 5 x 20 crunchies, 5 x 40 star jumps, 5 x 20 burpees, then hold the PLANK POSITION for as long as as possible. TIP: It will seem difficult at first, but once you get into a routine, it becomes easy. Have workout clothes next to your bed and focus on getting out of bed immediately when your alarm goes off. Don’t think about what you are about to do, JUST DO IT!

DIET: You are what you eat/drink. You wouldn’t put bad fuel in your car, so why put it in your body? Your performance will be affected by what you eat/drink – short term and long term. Therefore, your overall diet should be well balanced with large servings of green vegetables and salad. Avoid junk food that you know is detrimental to you – I don’t need to list these foods, you already know them, but they just taste too good! Right? ‘Garbabge’ – they taste great when consumed, but how do you feel afterwards once your taste buds have returned to normal – I guess not great! Getting better at anything takes discipline and often sacrifice. Ditch the junk food and the benefits that follow will far outweigh the “quick fix” pleasure these foods provide.

Your water intake should be high – you should never feel thirsty as this is an early sign of dehydration. Replace the consumption of soft drinks, tea and coffee with water. Drink a minimum of 2 liters and a maximum of 5 liters (depending on body size and intensity of exercise performed) each day. Carry water with you at all times, leave no invitation to dehydration in your body!

AIM! Drink 2 to 5 liters of water a day, avoiding soft drinks, tea and coffee. Eat servings of green vegetables/salads or fruit at every meal. Snack every 2-4 hours on fruits/salads/vegetables or nuts. Completely eliminate junk food from your diet. TIP: Discipline and dedication are key again. You don’t become an extraordinary footballer by doing ordinary things!

TEMPERAMENT AND CONCENTRATION: Temperament and concentration before, during and after a match are key ingredients in improving a footballer. Before a match, you need to focus on the overall goal. This concentration must remain strong and constant throughout. It shouldn’t make you fearful or nervous, but ultimately guide you to success. If you make a mistake or waste an opportunity, it shouldn’t affect your focus because your goal is still the same. It’s unlikely that your overall goal was to score at that particular time or not to make that mistake at that particular time. Therefore, focus on what you can achieve in the remaining time, there will be plenty of time to review performance once the match is over.

Finally, when the game is over, focus on winning or losing with dignity. It will not only make you a better footballer, but a better person. AIM ! : Before a game, spend 15-30 minutes focusing on what you really want to accomplish. Be clear about your outcome. Very often people fail because they don’t know exactly what they want to accomplish.

SIMPLY DO THINGS WELL AND OFTEN: Not every footballer can do the things that Cristiano Ronaldo, Zindine Zidane or Lionel Messi can do. But, all footballers can learn to do the simple skills often and well. I’m not trying to banish ‘flared’ and extravagant skills, but rather dilute them. Learning to play short passes accurately and directly 100% of the time is a huge advantage for any player. AIM! Practice short passing, correct positioning, hitting the ball, tackling, etc. often and for a long time. Many players believe that because they have mastered a technique, they no longer need to practice it – when in fact mastery and improvement comes from repeated practice of an already learned skill. This kind of dedication and commitment ensures that in the crucial moments of a game where executing a skill or technique is vital, you will be prepared.

LEARN FROM THE BEST: Why reinvent the wheel? If you want to become a top footballer, compare a top footballer. They may have natural skills, but reaching the level they have reached is no accident. If you want to level up to one or more players, copy what they regularly do (the beauty of benchmarking is that you can take the positives and eliminate any negative routines the player may have!). With footballers living their lives in the media spotlight and all sorts of data being freely available on the internet, it has never been easier to benchmark.

AIM! Pick a world-class player(s) you admire on and off the pitch. Gather information about their diet, training methods and fitness ideas. Study their movement and complete play in a number of games. Record matches in which they performed extremely well and analyze their qualities.
