16 Most Inspiring Famous Failures

To be successful in business or in life, I have come to realize that we must continually take corrective action. Putting myself in danger day in and day out can be extremely exhausting, especially when things don’t go the way I wanted. So, whenever I face a disappointing event or an undesirable outcome, I NEVER FORGET these famous failures:

1.Bill Gates, founder and president of Microsoft, has literally changed the culture of work in the world in the 21st century, simplifying the way the computer is used. He just happens to have been the richest man in the world for a decade. However, in the 70s before he started, he was a Harvard University dropout. The ironic part is that he started a software company (soon to become Microsoft) by buying software technology from “someone” for only $50 at the time.

2. Abraham Lincoln, received no more than 5 years of formal education throughout his life. When he grew up, he joined politics and had 12 major failures before being elected as the 16th President of the United States of America.

3.Isaac Newton was the greatest English mathematician of his generation. His work on optics and gravitation made him one of the greatest scientists the world has ever known. Many thought Isaac was born a genius, but he wasn’t! When he was young, he did very poorly in elementary school, so badly that his teachers couldn’t improve his grades.

4. Ludwig van Beethoven, a German composer of classical music, is widely regarded as one of the supreme composers in history. His reputation inspired – and in many cases intimidated – the composers, musicians and audiences who would come after him. Before the start of his career, Beethoven’s music teacher once said of him “as a composer he is hopeless”. And during his career he lost his hearing but he managed to produce great music – a deaf man who composes music, ironic no!

5.Thomas Edison who developed many devices that greatly influenced life in the 20th century. Edison is considered one of the most prolific inventors in history, holding 1,093 US patents to his name. When he was little, his teacher told him he was too stupid to learn anything. When he started out on his own, he tried over 9,000 experiments before creating the first successful light bulb.

6. The Woolworth Company was a retail business that was one of the first five and ten cent stores. The first Woolworth’s store was founded in 1878 by Frank Winfield Woolworth and quickly became one of the largest retail chains in the world in the 20th century. Before starting her own business, Woolworth got a job at a haberdashery when she was 21. But his employer wouldn’t let him serve as a customer because he concluded that Frank “didn’t have enough sense to serve customers.”

7. By acclamation, Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time. A phenomenal athlete with a unique combination of grace, speed, power, artistry, ability to improvise and an unquenchable desire to compete. Jordan single-handedly redefined the NBA superstar. Before joining the NBA, Jordan was just an ordinary person, so ordinary that he was kicked out of the high school basketball team because of his “lack of skill”.

8.Walter Disney was an American producer, director, screenwriter, voice actor and animator. One of the world’s best-known motion picture producers, Disney founded a production company. The company, now known as The Walt Disney Company, averages US$30 billion in revenue annually. Disney started its own company out of its garage, and its very first cartoon production went bankrupt. At his first press conference, a newspaper editor ridiculed Walt Disney for not having good ideas in film production.

9. Winston Churchill failed in 6th grade. However, that never stopped him from working harder! He fought and eventually became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in World War II. Churchill is generally regarded as one of the most important leaders in Britain and in world history. In a poll conducted by the BBC in 2002 to identify the “100 Greatest Britons”, participants voted Churchill as the most important of all.

10.Steven Spielberg is an American director. He won 3 Oscars and ranks among the most successful filmmakers in history. Above all, Steven has been recognized as the most financially successful film director of all time. During his childhood, Spielberg dropped out of college. He was persuaded to return and was placed in a class for the mentally handicapped. He only lasted a month, then dropped out of school forever.

11.Albert Einstein was a theoretical physicist widely regarded as the most important scientist of the 20th century. He was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his explanation of the photoelectric effect in 1905 and “for his services to theoretical physics”. However, when Einstein was young, his parents thought he was mentally retarded. His grades at school were so bad that a teacher asked him to stop, saying, “Einstein, you’ll never be worth anything!”

12. In 1947, a year after the start of his contract, Marilyn Monroe was dropped by 20th Century-Fox because her producer thought she was unattractive and couldn’t act. This did not discourage her at all! She went on to come to be recognized by the public as the most famous movie star, sex symbol and pop icon of the 20th century.

13. John GrishamThe first novel was rejected by sixteen agents and twelve publishers. He continued writing and writing until he became best known as a novelist and author for his works of modern legal drama. The media has named him one of the best living novelists of the 21st century.

14. Henry FordThe first two automakers went bankrupt. That didn’t stop him from incorporating Ford Motor Company and being the first to apply assembly-line manufacturing to the production of affordable automobiles in the world. He not only revolutionized industrial production in the United States and Europe, but also had such an influence on the economy and society of the 20th century. Its combination of mass production, high wages, and low prices for consumers started a school of management known as “Fordism”. He became one of the three most famous and richest men in the world during his time.

15. Soichiro Honda was turned down by Toyota Motor Corporation during a job interview as an “engineer” after World War II. He continued to be unemployed until his neighbors started buying his “homemade scooters”. He then set out on his own to set up his own business. Honda. Today, the company has grown to become the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer and one of the most profitable automakers – beating giant automakers such as GM and Chrysler. With a global network of 437 subsidiaries, Honda develops, manufactures and markets a wide variety of products ranging from small engines and general purpose scooters to specialist sports cars.

16. Akio Morita, founder of electrical household products giant, Sony Corporation, the first product was an electric rice cooker, only sold 100 cookers (because it burned rice rather than cooking it). Today, Sony generates a turnover of 66 billion US dollars and ranks 6th in the world among electronics and electrical companies.
