Eat, Sleep and Play to Be Young and Fit
People have never been fatter, sicker and weaker than they are now. Every time I travel to the US I am blown away by the number of fat and grossly out of shape people. Canada is also getting there, but seems to be about a decade behind. I was at Walmart here in Calgary the other day and literally worried about western civilization.
Why do fat kids drink slurpies while their parents load up the grocery cart with cheap processed poison, a common site now? Obesity and diabetes are epidemic in North America. Why? Unfortunately, the common response to obesity seems to be medication and then, as a last resort, surgery. He drives me crazy!
The solution to the obesity epidemic is so simple and free that I don’t even understand why it’s a problem. Hey, I was fat too, and after a bit of reading and personal research, I never struggled with my weight again. All we have to do is look back before our world changes and conspires to make us big and weak for profit. Think back to how people lived before 30% body fat was considered normal.
Before the industrial revolution:
Eat
People ate unprocessed foods. They ate a lot of cereal, but their cereal was actually healthy and was eaten to fill a hungry belly more than anything else. Meat was craved and vegetables were always next to them.
Don’t listen to anything you see on TV about food, especially supposedly healthy foods. If it comes in a package and contains chemicals, it’s not healthy or natural, despite what Kelloggs and General Mills would have you believe.
I am a huge proponent of the paleo diet and therefore believe that you should only eat what nature has provided for humans for thousands of years.
Eat this:
* natural or organic meat
* tons of vegetables
* fruits
* nuts
* whole natural yogurt
* berries
* fish, especially omega-3 fatty fish like wild salmon
Do not eat this:
* cereals
– don’t believe the hype, even the most natural grains are packed with phytoestrogens and phytades that actually prevent nutrient absorption
* Milk
– it’s basically chemical sugar water now, it’s so far removed from what comes out of a cow that I don’t think anyone should drink it
* anything that is processed (in wrapper or wrapper)
* alcohol, of course
* sugar
– it promotes cancer in the body and actually nourishes cancer cells
* corn
– it’s a grain, not a vegetable
– corn derivatives like high fructose corn syrup are killing our children with obesity and therefore diabetes
I have to mention that no one is perfect when it comes to eating well, especially me. The idea is to stay as true to a natural diet as possible so that when you mess up at a party, you don’t fall into a diabetic coma.
Sleep
Before television and computers, did you know what people did when it was dark? They were sleeping! They slept about 10 hours a day compared to our current norm of 5-7.
In fact, sleep is so important to weight loss and physical health that preventing it was the Soviets’ favorite method of torture. Your body needs sleep to recover from damage and stress, this is how you repair yourself. Forget late night TV and go to bed early. You will lose weight and feel better almost immediately.
Did you know that Cuban Olympic weightlifters slept 9 hours a day and then took a 3 hour nap? I learned this from Dan John’s site. They did it to recover from the stress of training and to maintain their weight to stay competitive in their class. In fact, I tried this for a few weeks a while ago and never felt better. It was unreal!

Imagine a world without cars. A world where if you needed to cross the city, you got there on foot, even if it took a few days. Maybe you rode a horse instead, but it’s still quite physical. Not to mention that they actually had to physically work every day to survive. From hunting to building to carrying stuff, people were burning serious calories just by living. Today, people sit on their bottoms all day, then can hit the gym for about an hour before going back to sitting. Unless you’re moving 8 hours a day, you’re sedentary, so stop thinking that your 3 times a week gym schedule should make you lose weight!
You need to train hard and often to be physically fit. Unless you are an elite athlete, you should vary your activities as much as possible. I recommend six days a week of good solid activity and one day a week of pure rest. Our lives are incredibly sedentary, so six days a week of varied activity won’t be too much as long as you’re sleeping and eating properly. Before you navigate to a website that tells you it’s okay to not exercise often and that you can get abs too, remember that you can make exercise fun. It doesn’t have to be a chore. Here are some pointers:
* Sprints, 1-2 times per week
* Lift heavy objects, 3 times a week
* Lift light stuff for high reps, 2-3 times a week
* Long slow cardio, hike or bike, no jog, once a week
* Play, 1 to 4 times a week
– play sports, play in jungle gym, just have fun with your workouts!
* Take the stairs
* Go to work on foot or by bike
* Go for a walk at lunchtime
* Find excuses to exercise without exercising!
In short, being healthy and looking healthy is very simple.
Eat a diet of natural foods rich in nutrients and low in empty calories.
Get as much sleep as possible, 10 hours is a good start. Just turn off the boob tube and go to bed! Maybe even bring your spouse with you a little earlier 😉
Exercise hard and often, but make it fun. Join a sports team, go hiking with your partner, and don’t be afraid to lift iron to keep that muscle going. Vary your activities so you don’t get bored and go through the motions.
In summary, do the exact opposite of what all fat people do and you’ll look and feel great.
