Simple Golf Swing Tips for Beginners – Playing a Fade or Draw
Having the ability to work the ball as a fade or draw is a huge advantage when playing golf. Like most golfers, I started with a fade. It was not my intention; it was just the way the golf ball traveled. For a while I just tried to work with the fade, but the more I tried to compensate for it, the worse it got.
Eventually out of frustration, I started looking for the cause of my fade and a way to fix it. When I understood, not only did I fix my slice, but I learned how to play a draw. I want to share with you the adjustments I learned to make to be able to draw the golf ball, hook the golf ball, or fade or slice the golf ball on purpose.
That way, when you’re on the golf course, you’ll better understand how to work the ball. Knowing how to play a draw or a fade will give you an advantage against a right dogleg or a left dogleg. You will also know how to work the ball when you have to face a crosswind.
Try These Simple Golf Swing Tips for Playing a Fade or Draw
Play a draw– Follow your usual routine. Aim your golf ball more to the right than you would for a forehand.
Use a stronger grip than your normal neutral grip. To do this, turn your hands slightly to the right. This helps encourage the clubface to roll a bit when putting the ball right to left. Don’t overdo it. A little change is all you need.
Make sure your shoulders, knees, and hips are pointing to the right. I like to move my right foot back a bit, maybe half an inch or so, just for comfort. This will cause the golf club to swing a little more under you from the inside.
Play a fade– Again, follow your normal routine. With a fade, you want to aim a bit more to the left of where you normally would for a straight shot.
With a fade, you want your take to be a bit on the weak side of neutral. To do this, turn your hands slightly to the left. Again, don’t overdo it.
Doing this will delay the closing of the clubface, causing it to come back a little open than normal. Now when you make contact with the ball, you spin it from left to right and hit a fade.
