Coaching Youth Sports – The Importance of Competition and The Value of Being a Winner
When I started writing this, I knew what many of you would already be thinking as soon as you read the title of this article before you even reached the opening paragraph. Some say to themselves “Winning isn’t everything” or “At youth level, we shouldn’t put so much emphasis on winning and losing”. How about: “We need to teach our children the value of teamwork and give them an environment to learn and have fun, without worrying about winning.” And to all of those thoughts, I’d say I have to wholeheartedly agree…for the most part.
Some of you might even be tempted to get angry and stop reading this before you get to the valid and all-encompassing quality point I want to make here about what we teach our young people in sport. So before you do, please bear with me and read this to the end. I promise not to disappoint you.
We live in a society today, and if you’ve been a coach, you know that’s true, where every kid is on the team and everyone plays whether they try or not. We live in a society today where every child gets a trophy, in many cases even if they don’t finish the season! We subscribed to the idea that this form of acceptance and tolerance is in fact
beneficial for our children, their well-being and their future. For anyone who watched the movie Remember the Titans, you’ll remember Coach Boone’s words to Coach Yoast after the ordeal with Petey. Coach Boone says: “You might think you’re helping these kids by putting them aside, every time big, bad, Coach Boone comes across one of them…but you don’t. help, YOU This is one of the truest and most relevant sayings when it comes to the politically correct and spoiled state of our society today. And it has affected our future generations more than we do. We think so. By depriving our young men and women of their competitive nature, we have begun to systematically eliminate the need or desire to triumph or excel. If no one wins and no one loses, then why bother trying to everything? Why the need to work hard and apply yourself? Does anyone out there remember the old intro that was played on Wide World of Sports “The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.” What happened to those days?
I will stop here to say that I am fully aware of the importance for every child to find something that interests them and that they can be a part of. Especially as a team. But just as all children have different social backgrounds and different personalities, they also have different things they are able to do and things they are not so much. Not all children are the same and not all children can do what another can do. But each
were created with greatness inside of them, and will be good for something!
Please don’t misunderstand and take what I’m trying to say out of context. We all know we can’t win all the time. Statistically, that’s not possible anyway. And we all know that life isn’t so much about winning the race as it is about finishing the race and how we finish it! Coming out of adversity and succeeding despite it is actually the victory of it all. Does anyone understand what I mean here.
In one of my previous articles, I pointed out that we are not only coaches, but we are also role models. We have a responsibility for the children we work with and we are expected to do everything in our power to help them become better people. But that’s not all. We are also entrusted with the task of helping our young people to realize that they have more in them than
they never give each other credit. That they have all, in one way or another, been brought to do something other than exist. They are winners! Mine and your job as a coach is not only to help them learn the game, but it is equally important to us to help them see themselves, act like and think like they are winners. We coaches, through motivation, competition and character, should instill that winning attitude in our players, even at a young age. Like I said before, “are we going to win every time, all the time?” Nope! But it is our duty as coaches to ensure that our players see themselves in sport…and in life, as winners. We MUST teach them to strive for and desire to be the best in whatever they are involved in. Not so that they think better of themselves than others, but rather so that they know they can be successful in any field. let them put their hearts and minds into it! The positive effect this thought could have on our children’s lives, in their lives and in their future could be overwhelming. We’ve stripped our young people of the value and advantages of competition, and it’s starting to show.
As coaches, we have an obligation to help the young people we teach to be all that they can be. No excuses! If we only work to instill this winning attitude, this desire for both personal and recreational victory, in our children, there will be no need to worry about our win/loss column. Because it will take care of itself and the winnings will accumulate.
This my friends is the importance of competition and the value of being a winner.
