Coaching Youth Soccer Players? Abide by the All Important Rule #1 and Everybody Wins
Are your children smiling and having fun when they clean their room? Probably not. And when they do carnival rides? Probably. It’s entirely possible that fun is a missing ingredient in your team.
Maybe coaching young footballers having fun doesn’t come naturally to you. Maybe you don’t know how to connect football and fun. It is best to always have a set schedule for every football training session. The practice agenda should involve activities that may serve no purpose other than having fun. The best activities are those that involve fun for the football players, with a drill or game that also teaches the desired skills.
Most young footballers are not yet old enough to have a competitive spirit or a strong will to win. But, they are motivated by fun activities. While coaching young soccer players, a coach should always remember to inject fun into practice time. A proven way to do this is to reward players (during training) by playing a game which is to earn “points” or “credits” or whatever you choose to call them, which can be redeemed for “prizes” such as:
1. Snacks, toys, etc.
2. Being excused from a boring exercise or endurance training activity
3. Inclusion in the starting lineup for the next game
4. Be an assistant coach for a day
5. Be captain in the next game
6. Choose the position they play the first shift of the next game
This works great if you’re awarding points for things like kicking the ball with their “strings”, making takedowns, protecting an opponent’s ball, or demonstrating any other concept you’re teaching in practice. At the end of the practice, the players with the most points can redeem their points for a prize of your choice.
All of these things can go a long way toward having more fun. Training young soccer players should include incorporating fun into the games to ensure your team’s long-term success and instill a desire to continue in soccer for your team. Another great use of this strategy is to “play a game on the sidelines”. Players receive points for being the first player to report when a player on the field performs a certain move or strategy learned in practice. Whatever skills your team learns in practice should be observed in games. Earning points for your players on the bench for noticing these techniques has the very valuable side effect of keeping the players on the bench attentive to the game. The points go towards their total in the next practice.
When you have been coaching young soccer players for some time, it becomes clear that planning a fun soccer activity is one of the magic ingredients of successful teams. Fun can improve your team’s attitude towards the game, increase camaraderie, help your players enjoy valuable time on the football pitch, and win more games!
